But first, why use design thinking? , as a 2014 study by the Design Management Institute showed that design- and customer-focused companies like Apple, Coca-Cola, Nike, and Procter & Gamble outperformed most S&P 500 companies by 219% in the last ten years.

So what is design thinking? It is an iterative process where we seek to understand the user, question assumptions and redefine problems in an attempt to identify alternative strategies and solutions that might not be instantly apparent with our initial level of understanding. Although there are different opinions about the stages, the most common are: empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test.

I will list tools that will help us during the application of Design Thinking:

Tools to identify needs

Empathizing Tools

Tools to define the problem

Tools to Ideate

Prototyping Tools

Tools to Test

Tools to identify needs

1. Analyze the existing initial data: Analyze past surveys, customer interviews, and customer service call logs.

2. Interview stakeholders: Not only interview customers but the teams that interact with them, such as the sales, post-sales and support team who usually know the unattended features, errors and improvements that users indicate to them.

3. “Five whys” technique: It consists of asking up to five times why a problem and trying to discover their needs seeking to get to the root of the problem and not a symptom.

4. Voice surveys: Customer surveys collect data, whether directly, via email, or via a pop-up window on a website, about the attitudes and expectations of existing or potential customers.

5. Map the customer process: It consists of preparing maps or flow charts to represent the process step by step, knowing who is in charge and who is involved, the times they currently take, etc.

6. Follow me home method: It involves escorting a client to their place of work or home to spend the day watching them do their work and identifying pain points in the process.

7.Customer journey: It is a visualization of the process that a customer experiences when they get involved with a product or service, including multiple phases, emotions and points of contact that a person goes through.

8. SWOT: Acronyms of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that must be analyzed both your own and those of your competitors

9. In How?, we look at how the person is doing what they are doing. In Why?, we make guesses about the person's motivations and emotions.

11. Studies on videos and photos of users: It can be given in two ways. The first is when users are recorded (with their permission) to analyze their reactions and behaviors in response to the resolution of the problem in question. Another way is to give users the option to record themselves.

12. Involve “end users”: Although the focus is not to develop solutions for those users because it is complex to keep everyone happy at all times, however, the chances of not frustrating users can be improved.

13. Analogous Empathy: It consists of comparing your problem to another in a different field, creating an “inspiration board” with notes and images, and focusing on similarities across multiple scenarios.

14. Share inspiring stories: By sharing the stories each member has observed, the team can catch up on progress, extract meaning from the stories, and capture interesting details of the observation work.

15. Bodystorming: It is the act of physically experiencing a situation in order to fully immerse oneself in the user's environment.

Marketing team photo created by tirachardz – www.freepik.es

Tools to define the problem

16. Analysis and synthesis: Analysis tries to break down complex concepts and problems into smaller, easier-to-understand components. Synthesis, on the other hand, involves creatively putting the puzzle together to form complete ideas. Analysis is carried out during the Empathize stage and synthesis is carried out during the Define stage.

17. Mind maps and group and affinity diagrams: Grouping of ideas and facts where observations and findings are collected in one place, to create a collage of experiences, thoughts, perceptions and stories.

18. Map of empathy: It consists of a board, paper, or table, reflecting the key traits that the users demonstrated during the observation stage.
