9 tareas cotidianas para disminuir nuestro impacto en el medio ambiente

50 years ago the first United Nations Conference on the Environment was held where UNEP was established and June 5 of each year was designated as World Environment Day. In commemoration of this, the motto of that occasion will be repeated: “One Earth”. Highlighting the need to live sustainably, in harmony with nature, through substantial changes driven by daily choices that guide us towards cleaner and more ecological lifestyles.

We believe that many people modifying everyday tasks can achieve a great impact. Therefore, within the framework of "Preservando", a socio-environmental project that we lead with my husband, we selected nine activities that we changed a couple of years ago in our daily habits, simple but relevant for our planet:

  • #1: According to MINAM, only 210 municipalities segregate their waste. We do not solve anything by complaining, but we can act by separating the waste in our home and delivering it to the municipal recyclers.
  • #2: Constantly organizing your home will cause you to avoid accumulating objects that you do not use or do not need. In this way, we can donate or reuse giving a second use to our objects and we will not buy more than necessary. We recommend the account Create and Order for home management information.
  • #3: The Bulletin of the Spanish Society of Ceramics and Glass indicates that glass is an ecological material by nature: it is inert and recyclable at 100%. Reusing glass containers for food will not only be better for keeping them in good condition, but will help reduce the use of plastics.
  • 1TP4Q4: According to Science magazine, particulate-forming emissions from household cleaning chemicals are about twice as high as those from the transportation sector. There are many alternative household products like vinegar, lemon, and baking soda that are great for cleaning floors.
  • 1TP4Q5: According to CNN, the beauty and personal care sector produces an average of 120,000 million units of packaging, most of which is single-use and ends up in a landfill. We have used more than 4 years Creeping Misha where they find products for skin care, makeup and personal hygiene products.
  • #6: The HitachiAir portal indicates that plants reduce the presence of dust in the environment by 20% and act as acoustic absorbers, especially in closed places and with hard floors. If your homes do not have much exposure to the sun, as is the case in our department, there are a variety of shade plants and substrates that allow their growth, such as those sold in "La Muyita". If your home has more exposure to the sun, there are many more varieties of plants and I recommend you follow “Orchard in the port” who turned his yard into a mini-garden and is now teaching how to make homemade compost.
  • #7: Before buying clothes that have animal component materials, find out if they have certifications where animals do not suffer in any part of the process. In our case, when practicing mountaineering, down jackets and sleeping bags are efficient due to their low weight and high shelter. But, we only buy if they have the RDS certificate, which is a global measure to certify the products and the obtaining of feathers and down in a process free of animal abuse.
  • #8: According to the Mexican government, bicycles are the most sustainable form of transportation, because: they do not consume fuel, they do not emit greenhouse gases and they produce noise levels much lower than those of cars. At home, we encourage the whole family to use a bicycle to get around or, failing that, use public transport.
  • 1TP4Q9: According to a report by the Environmental Paper Network, paper consumption reaches unsustainable levels and is steadily increasing globally. It recently exceeded 400 million tons per year globally. Avoiding as much as possible the use of paper, Pos It, agendas was a bit difficult for us, since we were very used to reading physical books and carrying earrings in agendas. But it was quite comfortable and even cheaper for us to read books on Amazon, migrate to the digital agenda of Google Calendar and move our notes to GoodNotes.

Our socio-environmental commitment focuses on environments in mountain areas. However, in this post we want to show you with examples of our day to day (all photos are ours), that it is in our hands to reduce the impact that we will leave for future generations.

At the bottom you can comment on activities you do at home, we read you!
