¿Es importante contar con un plan de sostenibilidad personal?

I asked myself this question a couple of weeks ago, since the accumulation of everyone's actions generates a mark on our environment.

The impact we have on our environment is worrying in Latin America, for example, the New York Times (2017) points out that 74% of Latin Americans consider climate change to be one of the most important global risks.

Fortunately, there are tools that allow you to measure your personal carbon footprint, such is the example of Greenbusiness Ltda. which has a portal where anyone can calculate their carbon footprint, based on data on energy consumption at home, transport and consumption and waste habits.

The actions we take to reduce our impact on the environment can be established in a personal sustainability plan, which guides our actions and allows us to measure our own progress. That is why I adapted the goals of the following SDGs to make a baseline in order to reduce my carbon footprint:

  • SDG 11 "Sustainable cities and communities": Strengthening mobility habits where low levels of environmental pollution are emitted. Likewise, avoiding the contamination of the city by following the cleaning patterns established by the Local Government.
  • SDG 12 “Responsible Production and Consumption”: Strengthening good practices regarding the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), as well as promoting lifestyles that are in harmony with nature.
  • SDG 13 “Climate Action”: Adopting measures to reduce the pollution that I emit within my environment. Also, generating an environmental culture within my home to reduce my impact on the environment.
